What is ælfflæd of mercia?

Ælfflæd of Mercia was a queen consort of Northumbria, married to Æthelred, King of Northumbria. She was born in Mercia, the daughter of King Offa and Queen Cynethryth.

Ælfflæd was a politically astute queen and was known for her involvement in the church, supporting the establishment of several monasteries, including one at Hexham where she was buried. She also helped to establish friendlier relations between Northumbria and Mercia.

After her husband's death in 705, she served as a regent for her young son Osred. She continued to be involved in politics until her own death in 714.

Ælfflæd was highly regarded and respected in her time, with chroniclers praising her intelligence, piety, and devotion to her people. She was also known for her generosity and patronage of the arts.
